Expat's Guide to Renting in Riga

Riga is an increasingly popular destination for expats, remote workers, and digital nomads. The city offers a high quality of life at a fraction of the cost of Western Europe. But renting here as a foreigner has its nuances — here is what you need to know.

What Documents You Will Need

Most landlords will ask for a valid passport or ID, proof of employment or income (a contract, payslips, or bank statements), and sometimes a reference from a previous landlord. Having these ready speeds up the process significantly.

Understanding the Lease

Standard leases in Riga are 12 months, though 6-month and open-ended contracts are also common. Make sure you understand the notice period (typically one to three months), the conditions for security deposit return, and who is responsible for utilities.

Most leases are in Latvian. If you do not speak Latvian, it is worth having a bilingual agent or translator review the document before signing.

What to Watch Out For

Be cautious of apartments listed at prices significantly below market rate — they are often too good to be true. Always view the apartment in person before paying any deposit. Verify that the person renting it to you is the actual owner by checking the Land Register (Zemesgrāmata).
